Rewards are here: helping chores feel worth it

Xtra Hands 1.2.0 is all about rewards.

The new Rewards Store gives your household a simple way to connect chores to the things that actually motivate people: screen time, a sleepover, a trip for ice cream, a toy they are saving for, cash allowance, or whatever works in your home.

Not every household runs on the same motivators. Not every member is motivated by the same thing. And honestly, not every chore needs a payout attached to it.

That was the point of this release: rewards without turning the whole house into a game economy.

Why rewards needed more than a balance

The first version of Xtra Hands already helped with the daily loop: who has chores, what is done, what carried over, and what someone earned. That solved a lot of the reminder problem.

But earning is only half of motivation. The other half is knowing what that earning can become.

A number on a ledger is useful for parents. It keeps allowance honest. It answers "how much do I owe?" without a mental math session at the kitchen counter.

For the person doing the chore, though, the motivator is usually more specific. It is not always the balance. It is what the balance means.

That is what the Rewards Store is for.

Real rewards, household rules

Parents can now create rewards for their household, choose what they cost, and decide who can redeem them. A reward can cost money, stars, or both. It can be instant, or it can require approval first.

That last part matters.

Some rewards are simple. If someone has earned enough stars for a small treat, maybe they can redeem it right away. Other rewards need a parent in the loop. Extra screen time, a weekend plan, a bigger purchase, or anything that depends on timing should wait for approval.

In 1.2.0, members can request a reward from the app, and parents can approve or reject the request before balances change. The app keeps the accounting straight, but the household still gets to keep its own rules.

Stars are a new way to earn

Allowance is not the right fit for every member or every season. Sometimes you want the motivation of earning without attaching every chore to dollars.

Stars give you that option.

A member can earn money, earn stars, or not earn for chores at all. Stars are intentionally simple: whole-number points that add up as chores get done. They can be used for rewards, and parents can convert stars to money when that fits the household.

That gives families a middle ground. You can keep cash allowance for one member, use stars for another, and leave ordinary family responsibilities unpaid when that is the better lesson.

The reward moment should feel good

We also made chore completion feel more connected to what was earned.

When a member completes a chore that earns stars or money, the reward now pops from the chore itself, counts up, and settles into the day. It is a small thing, but it makes the app feel less like checking a box and more like seeing effort turn into something.

That is the balance we are aiming for: satisfying, not noisy. Motivating, not manipulative.

What is new in 1.2.0

Here is the short version:

• Members can browse the Rewards Store and redeem what they have earned.

• Parents can create, edit, archive, and delete household rewards.

• Rewards can use money, stars, or both.

• Rewards can be instant or require parent approval.

• Parents get a reward request inbox for approving or rejecting redemptions.

• Stars are now a full earning unit alongside money.

• Member balances, parent overview cards, and the ledger have been updated to make rewards clearer.

• Completing a chore can now show the reward being earned in the moment.

Why this matters

The goal of Xtra Hands is still the same: fewer repeated reminders, clearer responsibility, and a calmer household.

Rewards do not replace that. They support it.

When the motivator is clear, the conversation changes. Instead of "go do your chores," it can become "you are two stars away from the reward you picked." Instead of a parent trying to remember what was promised, the app holds the request, the balance, and the approval step in one place.

It is still your household. Your standards, your rewards, your call.
