Carry-Over Chores: Keep Important Work on the List

Some chores can wait for their next turn. Others still need doing even if the day you planned for them has passed. A missed day should not make that work disappear from the list.

That is why we built carry-over chores in Xtra Hands. Turn on Carry over if missed for a chore that should stay open after its assigned day. The next day, it appears as carried over instead of simply being marked missed, so your household can still follow through.

Why we built it

A schedule is useful, but real days rarely follow one perfectly. Maybe washing the school uniforms was on Saturday's list, but Saturday filled up. The uniforms still need washing before the week begins. Carry-over makes that unfinished work visible without asking you to recreate the chore or pretend it was done on time.

You choose which chores get that treatment. Leave carry-over off for work that only makes sense on its assigned day. Turn it on for work that still matters tomorrow.

How to turn on carry-over

  1. On the parent side of the app, create a chore or open one to edit it.

  2. In Options, turn on Carry over if missed.

  3. Leave Grace period (days) at the dash for the default, or use the plus button to set a number of days.

  4. Save the chore.

With no grace period set, a repeating chore can remain open until its next scheduled occurrence. A one-time chore can remain open until it is completed. If you set a grace period, the missed chore can stay open for that many days after its due date. It becomes missed when that window ends; for a repeating chore, its next scheduled occurrence can close the old one sooner. A grace period is useful when the work matters for a while, but not indefinitely.

A missed day is not the end of the plan

Carry-over is a small choice when you set up a chore, but it changes what happens when life gets busy. The important work stays in view, and the person responsible can finish it instead of losing track of it. Use it for the chores your household still needs done, even when the calendar moves on.
